Hang gliding,

This week, the Jonathan is back from the Guy Englebert workshop. This aircraft is representative of the first modern hang gliders. In the years 1970’s, a few precursors invented a new way to practice aviation. We include pictures of the Jonathan, a link to a website about the birth of the hang gliders and a video depicting the early trials of these forerunners of the modern deltaplanes. The Jonathan will be the object of a study prior to a future restoration. This restoration is not for the near future as we have still a lot of project to complete before putting our hands on the Jonathan.

Vincent found a website about the restoration of the PBJ-1J (the B-25 in service with the US Marine) of the Commemorative Air Force.

You will find hereafter two video about aircraft manufacturing. One of these video (discovered by Philippe) shows the assembling of the Airbus A-340, the second is a short film about aircraft manufacturing in 1910. These two films demonstrate the progresses from experiment to an industry.

You will also find a link to the index of bamm 141. This issue is the last one where Jacques Schelfaut acted as chief editor. Jacques is now taking a second retirement after producing some nice bamm’s.He will still be active at the Museum. It was (and it will always be) a pleasure to work with him.

Hoping to see you soon.

Thanks to Vincent & Philippe for information or links included in these ews.

D'otreppe Glider Jonathan Livingston
Brussel Air Museum - Apr 19, 2009
Thanks to the Vissenaken team, the Jonathan is back at the Museum.

In March 2009, we visited the workshop of Guy Englebert where the Jonathan is stored. Guy planned to restore the glider but he cannot perform the task alone. The target of the visit was to check the state of wood structure as Guy has cleaned the old fabric. The airframe was found in good state with a few ribs broken during the transport but the Jonathan can now ferried back to the Museum. When back at home, our first task will to document the aircraft as no drawings nor documentation is know...

The hang gliding mayhem began

In the years 1970's, a few US youg men reinvented the hang gliders. Using the techniques discovered by Chanute and Otto Lilienthal, they tried to fly. After some uncessfull experiments they finally fly with we know today as Deltaplanes. Amongst these peoples, Jack Lambie who inspired Bernard d'Otreppes for his Jonathan glider.

THE MAKING OF North American PBJ-1J "SEMPER FI"

At the Commemorative Air Force's repair hangar at Camarillo Airport, the clanking of tools fills the air. All around are antique military aircraft in various stages of repair. At the far end of this hangar, there's a plane bigger than the others — a 1944 B-25/PBJ Mitchell bomber.

There are many B-25 Mitchells in museums and flying in air shows around the world, but the PBJ model, a B-25 Mitchell owned by the Navy and flown by Marines, is a whole different story.
