Tijdelijke tentoonstelling in het Koninklijk Legermuseum

Pierre de Caters, de eerste Belgische vliegenier
Pierre de Caters, een verbeten wielrenner, tennisspeler en schermer, kan dankzij zijn fortuin ook verschillende auto’s kopen, waarvan hij de motor bewerkt om de prestaties van de voertuigen op te drijven. In mei 1904 mag hij een wereldrecord op zijn naam schrijven: tussen Oostende en Nieuwpoort weet hij meer dan 150km/u te behalen. Na deelname aan talrijke autowedstrijden gaat hij zich voor de snelheid op het water interesseren en met zijn motorboot “Sea Sick” blinkt hij ook daar uit. In de zomer van 1908 besluit hij zich volledig op de luchtvaart toe te leggen. Hij bestelt twee toestellen bij de broers Voisin, de bekendste constructeurs uit die tijd. Baron de Caters laat het materieel naar zijn domein in de streek van Antwerpen overbrengen, waar hij een groot privé-vliegveld aanlegt met loodsen, werkplaatsen en oefenbaan.
Hij wijzigt het oorspronkelijke toestel en voorziet het van een Belgische motor van 100 pk. Na een reeks systematische proeven slaagt hij erin een gecontroleerde vlucht over minstens 200 m te maken. Op 30 november 1908 is de eerste Belgische vlucht door een Belg op een toestel met een motor van plaatselijke makelij een feit.
In 1909 en 1910 neemt de baron aan talloze vliegmeetings deel. Hij sleept heel wat prijzen in de wacht en wordt ook de eerste vliegenier in Constantinopel, Cairo en India. In Calcutta en Bangalore deelt hij de schijnwerpers met Jules Tyck, één van onze andere pioniers, die op Blériot vliegt.
In het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog is hij als instructeur in de vliegschool van Etampes te vinden. Daarna vestigt de Caters zich in Parijs en trekt hij zich uit het sportcircuit terug. Hij overlijdt in de lichtstad in maart 1944, na een groot deel van zijn fortuin aan de ontwikkeling van de luchtvaart in ons land te hebben gespendeerd.
Tussen 29 november 2008 en 3 mei 2009 loopt in het Koninklijk Legermuseum een tentoonstelling over baron de Caters en zijn luchtvaartavontuur. Een replica op ware grootte van zijn Voisin tweedekker vormt het middelpunt van het evenement. Verschillende grote schaalmodellen, uitzonderlijke motoren uit die tijd en originele documenten vervolledigen het aanbod. Dankzij de hulp van het Belgische Filmarchief kunnen de bezoekers ook een film uit 1911 bekijken, met beelden van een Belgische etappe in het “Europese circuit”, één van de eerste internationale luchtvaartwedstrijden.

Pierre de Caters, premier aviateur belge
De Caters était un sportif enragé, pratiquant la bicyclette, le tennis, l'escrime, etc. Sa fortune lui permet de s'acheter plusieurs voitures, qu'il transforme afin d'en accroître la vitesse maximale. En mai 1904, il remporte ainsi un record du monde, en dépassant les 150 km/h sur la route d'Ostende à Nieuport. Après de nombreuses compétitions automobiles, il s'intéresse aussi à la vitesse sur eau. Il s'illustre là aussi brillamment, aux commandes de son canot à moteur baptisé "Sea Sick". Dès l'été 1908, il décide de se consacrer entièrement à l'aviation. Il commande deux appareils aux frères Voisin, les constructeurs les plus renommés de cette époque. Le baron de Caters fait transporter tous ces matériels sur ses terres des environs d'Anvers, où il aménage un vaste aérodrome privé, avec hangar, atelier et piste d'essais.
Ayant modifié l'appareil original et l'ayant fait rééquiper d'un moteur de conception belge de 100 CV, de Caters parvient après une série d'essais systématiques à réussir un vol contrôlé d'au moins 200 m. Le 30 novembre 1908, le premier vol belge, tenté par un Belge sur un appareil muni d'un moteur de fabrication locale, vient d'être réalisé.
En 1909 et en 1910, le baron devient l'une des figures en vue des premiers meetings aériens. Il remporte de nombreuses épreuves et devient également le premier aviateur à se produire à Constantinople, au Caire et aux Indes. A Calcutta et à Bangalore, il partage l'affiche avec Jules Tyck, un autre de nos pionniers, qui vole lui sur Blériot.
Après avoir repris du service comme moniteur à l'Ecole d'aviation d'Etampes, au début de la Première Guerre mondiale, de Caters s'établit à Paris et se retire du circuit sportif. Il décède à Paris en mars 1944, après avoir consacré une grande partie de sa fortune au développement de l'aviation dans notre pays.
Le Musée de l'Armée lui consacrera une exposition commémorative, du 29 novembre 2008 au 3 mai 2009. Une réplique grandeur nature du grand biplan Voisin de Pierre de Caters sera le point central de cette exposition. En outre, plusieurs maquettes de grandes dimensions, des moteurs d’époque devenus extrêmement rares et des documents originaux seront exposés. Grâce à l’aide de la Cinémathèque royale de Belgique, les visiteurs auront également la possibilité de visionner un film datant de 1911 et montrant une étape belge du « Circuit européen », une des premières courses aériennes internationales.

Pierre de Caters, the first Belgian aviator
Pierre de Caters, a fanatical cyclist, tennis player and fencer, also uses his considerable fortune to buy several cars, the engines of which he boosts in order to reach higher speeds. In May 1904 he captures a world record, exceeding 150km/h on the road between Ostend and Nieuwpoort. After car racing, he switches to speed on water, where he shines with his motor-boat “Sea Sick”. As early as the summer of 1908 he decides to focus solely on aviation. He places an order for two planes with the Voisin brothers, the best-known constructors of those days. Baron de Caters transfers all his equipment to his estate in the Antwerp area, where he builds workshops, hangars and a trial track.
He modifies the original machine and equips it with a 100 hp Belgian engine. After a series of systematic tests he manages a controlled flight over at least 200 meters. On November 30, 1908 the first Belgian flight by a Belgian aviator on an airplane equipped with a locally made engine is a fact.
In 1909 and 1910 the baron participates in numerous air shows. He wins several competitions and also becomes the first aviator in Constantinople, Cairo and India. In Calcutta and Bangalore he is joined by Jules Tyck, another Belgian pioneer, flying on Blériot.
When the First World War breaks out he is to be found as an instructor at the flying school of Etampes. Later, de Caters moves to Paris and completely withdraws from sporting competitions. He passes away in Paris in March 1944, after having spent a large part of his fortune on the development of Belgian aviation.
From November 29 till May 3, 2009 the Royal Military Museum organizes a commemorative exhibition, dedicated to de Caters. A life-size replica of his Voisin biplane will hold center stage. Several large scale-models, exceptional engines and original documents will make for a most interesting event. Thanks to the Belgian Film Archives, visitors will also be able to enjoy a 1911 film about a Belgian stage in the “European Circuit”, one of the first international aviation races.
